--Get ready to explore the countryside and mountains near Livingston during this two-day plein air painting workshop with Tom English. Find “the story” in the landscape and paint it in a way that is direct, simple, fresh, and honest. Engage in fun exercises designed to focus on value, color, and shape. From that foundation, you’ll explore edges, atmospheric perspective, color and shape relationships, composition, and mood. Most importantly you’ll learn to paint with greater intention. Through demonstrations, group discussions, composition walks, painting exercises, and plenty of individual instruction, you will learn to approach the landscape with enthusiasm and confidence.
--About the instructor: I have a bachelor of fine arts in drawing and painting from Sul Ross State U. In Alpine, TX I worked as a graphic designer and an illustrator for 18 years before turning to full time painting. I have taken workshops with Jim Wilcox, Scott Christensen, Laura Robb, and Matt Smith. I am an avid collector of art books, and study intently the works of modern and past masters. Also, I visit art museums in the U.S. and abroad whenever possible.
--I teach the basics of painting using a limited palette as I believe this makes color theory make sense and easier to retain. I also teach the development of a composition by organizing simple shapes into a strong abstract design, and reducing the difficulty of dealing with a complex arrangement. I like for my own work to be based on strong drawing, painted in an impressionistic, painterly style, that appears real and natural when viewed from a distance. I encourage students to understand the principals of solid painting methods, but to explore their own interests and individual approaches to painting.
