One More Message regarding Small Business Revolution
December 19, 2019 @ 8:00 am - January 15, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
Hi everyone! This is hopefully the last message for a bit until we can all make it through the holiday rush! Thank you for your positive messages over the past few weeks and for sharing so much positive social media outreach; not just about how great your business is but what a great group of small businesses the town has to offer and about the wonderful community we live and play in.
A s expected, I have received a few negative messages about businesses not getting visited when the Small Business Revolution (SBR) team was here. The ladies visited close to 50 businesses while they were here and got a very good understanding of just how much of a broad, unique and eclectic reach we have in our community with what we offer. They had visited two towns in Oregon prior to our town and they only visited 74 businesses, in total, between those two towns. We worked hard to get them to as many as we could! I also convinced them to stay to take part in the Christmas Stroll which I know they did, and enjoyed. While every small business owner has a very unique offering, this is not a competition to see who has the most unique offering. This is about a small town pulling together – as we do for many things – to reach a very exciting goal of becoming the Number 1 small town to be featured in Season 5 of SBR.
With that said, I also have received some very positive messages of gratitude. This has been a labor of love for me as I am very connected to the community on many levels. My time with emails and phone calls and town tours and meetings, etc. is entirely volunteer time and those who really know me also know that I don’t have any extra time to give. So, thank you much to those who have been appreciative of what I have been doing with limited time.
The Livingston Business Improvement District also contracts with Kris King with Buzz Me Media and we are happy to pay her to help with communications and the wonderful social outreach she gets out in front of many media outlets. She also shares so many of your social media posts which helps boosts the number of times social media followers see your great media posts. If you see her, give her a big thank you!
As you know, the hit Hulu series SBR is considering Livingston to be featured in its fifth season as it continues its mission to revitalize small town America one business at a time. They are not looking for the town that’s perfect and has everything under control and is doing it all perfectly because they can’t provide an educational show from that situation. Each season of SBR centers around a select number of small businesses in a town, the team from Deluxe spends time talking with local entrepreneurs about the aspects of their businesses they feel are lagging the most, then the team springs into action to work with the owners to build short-term and long-term business plans to help improve the marketing and promotion of the business. Deluxe invests $500,000 into the businesses they feature with some of that money also going towards improvements to the town to help generate foot traffic through small business districts.
They have indicated that it takes a community and business owners working together, working hand in hand with organizations that are there to support them to really make it work. The next step of the process will be for the crew to collaborate and compare notes about the towns they visited and narrow that list down to the top five; after that, it’s put to a nationwide vote to find out who the lucky winner will be.
So, again, here is the timeline:
January 14th – Announcement online at Small Business Revolution – Amanda Brinkman or Ty Pennington or both will be announcing the top 5 teams. This will be announced live at www.smallbusinessrevolution.org.
o January 14th to January 21st – Online voting takes place and according to past rules for voting, SBR created the contest to allow people to vote once per day, per device. For example, if you have a computer, Ipad and a smart phone, you can cast three votes per day. They do that to be fair to all communities involved so that computer bots are not arranged to vote thousands of times an hour for any particular town. The question has also been raised about voting per browser: If on your desktop, you have Firefox, Chrome and Windows internet browsers, you can vote once per day on each browser as well. SBR will have safeguards in place to monitor activities and to ensure computer bots are not utilized. If SBR sees this happening, they will notify the town leader and this may jeopardize our standing in the contest if they determine this was done maliciously. This means EVERYONE has to reach out to all of their contacts (locally, regionally or nationally) in order to get Livingston voted in - EVERYONE and all of their contacts. If anyone has a good relationship with any one of our fine and famous folks from the area (Jeff Bridges, John Mayer, Michael Keaton, etc), towns have used these relationships in the past to get them to get the message out on their social media pages...to garner increased nationwide votes.
o Deluxe announces the winning town on January 21st or 22nd.
o From then, businesses that are interested in participating as featured shops have to fill out a very extensive application to be considered for assistance and resources.
o The Deluxe SBR team selects the 5 to 6 featured businesses. Although the team will focus the majority of their efforts on six selected businesses, this can make a huge impact on all our small businesses; plus the amount of publicity Livingston would receive from a Hulu show would be significant.
Although the decision is ultimately to be decided by vote, below are hints at what might help push Livingston in to the number 1 position:
o The Deluxe crew monitors social media to keep track of how invested the community is in their local businesses. They like to see pictures and videos of patrons enjoying the fruits of their local businesses.
o Use the hash tag #mylivingston, #smallbusinessrevolution and @smallbusinessrevolution when posting on social media to attract their attention.
o They like to see that the community is behind the movement and suggest to talk about the owner or something you get from the business.
o If you have not watched any of the episodes of Small Business Revolution, it would be helpful if you did.
Please begin to share what you love about Livingston on social media. Be sure to tag @smallbusinessrevolution and use the hashtag #mylivingston and #smallbusinessrevolution.
Thanks everyone who has helped build this energy with hanging of posters, social media posts, great communication with the Deluxe team during their visit with you, etc. I will be in touch after the Christmas holiday but until then, keep posting great pictures and reasons why Livingston should be the Season 5 winner!
