Blue Slipper presents stage lighting workshop
November 11 @ 8:00 am - December 16 @ 5:00 pm

According to one of America’s most prominent theatre artists, David Belasco, “Lights are to
drama what music is to the lyrics of a song.” On Saturday, Dec. 16, the Blue Slipper Theatre
offers an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of stage lighting with a workshop taught by
Livingston director/designer Marc Beaudin.
“Basics of Stage Lighting” is a hands-on workshop designed to give participants the knowledge
and tools to successfully create the lighting for live theatre, including terminology, equipment,
safety, color mixing, three- and four-point lighting theory, and the process of designing, building
and programming a production.
The workshop will benefit anyone wishing to explore lighting design or operation, as well as
directors, actors, stage managers, audience members and other theatre folks wishing to further
their knowledge of what’s going on behind the scenes of a play. Also, musicians, deejays, venue
managers and others involved in any form of live performance will gain valuable skills.
Beaudin has worked in theatre for nearly 25 years as a scenic, lighting, and sound designer, stage
director, and educator. In Michigan, he was the scenic designer/technical director for the 300-
seat Pit & Balcony Theatre, as well as Pritchard Theatrical Productions at the historic Colwell
Opera House and the Great Lakes regional touring company, For a Good Time Theatre. He was
also a founding artistic director of the 303 Collective. Several productions were named as a Top
10 Arts Event of the Year by the Saginaw News, and published reviews of his design work have
called it “gorgeous, intriguing and stellar” (Amadeus), “gripping, permeating atmosphere” (The
Exonerated), and “nothing short of mesmerizing (No Exit). In Montana, he has directed and
designed numerous shows for the Blue Slipper, the Caldera Theatre Company, and Bozeman
Actors Theatre.
The workshop, open to anyone age 16 and up, will be held from 1 to 5 pm. No previous
experience is necessary to participate, but space is limited – those interested are encouraged to
register early. Tuition is $30 and includes all materials. For more information and to register,
